Biden May Appoint Saule Omarova to Watch The Wall Street

In Brief:

  • Saule Omarova, Cornell Law School Professor, appointed by U.S president Biden to run the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
  • In past, Omarova had criticized the cryptocurrencies by calling it “vulnerable assets”.
  • To get confirmation on this role, she will need senate confirmation.

U.S President, Joe Biden plans to appoint Saule Omarova, a Cornell Law School professor to lead the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which is the regulatory authority to watch over the largest U.S Banks and Wall street. Bloomberg first reported the news based on unknown sources.

“I am deeply honored to be nominated for this role in President Biden’s administration,” Ms. Omarova said, “If confirmed, I will work hard to make sure that our banks remain stable, strong and serve the needs of the American people.”

Saule Omarova, who stated in the past that she wants to “end banking as we know it,” is going to be appointed by the President to run the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) by the end of this week.

As of the time of writing, there is no official statement given from the White House. It is also set to vote on the Unamended Infrastructure Bill on 27 September.

OCC supervises leading and prominent moneylender institutions such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bank of America Corp., and Citigroup Inc.

Saule Omarova is expected to impose stricter rules and tougher oversight. This appointment is also raising questions from Wall Street’s Intellectuals. Because, it is still not clear whether Biden’s administration will support the agenda of  Saule Omarova, such as moving consumer banking to the Federal Reserve from private institutions.

Saule Omarova had warned authorities for cryptocurrencies and advised the government to have a vital role in banking to run a top Wall Street regulator.

In talk of cryptocurrencies and Decentralised Finance, She had given her view that “benefiting mainly the dysfunctional financial system we already have.” Also, she added that digital tokens are a big threat to the economy as they can destabilize the economy and they are vulnerable too.

There is still confirmation that this position is awaited as Omarova’s nomination will require Senate confirmation — a tough battle given the 50-50 split between Republican senators and the Democratic caucus.

Ms.Omarova has experience in government as well as at a Cornell law school as a professor. Earlier, She spent time at the Treasury Department as a policy adviser. Where she was working for the bank lawyer Randel K. Quarles, later who was served as a Senior Treasury official

Under Trump’s administration, Mr. Quarles was hired to be the Federal Reserve’s vice chair for supervision, the top bank regulatory position at the central bank. If Ms. Omarova is appointed then she will become a counterpart of her former Boss.
