Biden Admin Summons 30 Countries to Fight Against Ransomware

In Brief:

  • US summon 30 nations to talk about ransomware and international cybercrime
  • The administration is apparently looking to gather members of NATO and the G7 on the issue
  • Joe Biden announced the proclamation of October 2021 as Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Biden admin announced the proclamation of October 2021 as a Cybersecurity month to raise awareness about various cyber threats and to create awareness regarding the use of sensitive data safely.

In a press release White House stated that Increasingly, cyber actors are posing a constant threat.  Hospitals, schools, police departments, fuel pipelines, food suppliers, and small businesses have all been affected by ransomware attacks, resulting in the disruption of essential services and the loss of lives and livelihoods. We cannot let disruptions, corruption, or malfunctions in our vital infrastructure threaten national and economic security, public health, or our everyday lives.

According to the White House, Cybersecurity Awareness month will elevate the central role that cybersecurity plays in the national security and the economy of the United States.

At the beginning of the year, they began establishing cybersecurity goals for America’s critical infrastructure owners and operators.  Additionally, they announced a 100-day initiative to improve cybersecurity across the electric sector.

In addition, the White House also says that the Biden Administration is working with the international community on elevating cybersecurity’s profile as a source of global security. Our NATO allies as well as U.S. partners in the G7 work closely with us to combat these threats.

The United States will gather 30 nations this month to accelerate their cooperation in combating cybercrime, improving collaboration between law enforcement agencies, stemming the illicit use of cryptocurrency, and engaging diplomatically on these issues.

“As my Administration moves forward I am confident that the developments we have made will allow us to build back better – modernizing our defenses and securing the technology that is a cornerstone of our security and prosperity going forward..” says President Biden.
