Facebook Changes its Brand Name to “Meta” as Part of Metaverse Push

In Brief:

  • Facebook CEO announced the corporation’s name is being changed to Meta.
  • The name ‘Meta’ reflects the company’s focus on metaverse development.
  • Zuckerberg introduced a new logo at their HQ in California.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, announced they are changing the corporate’s name to Meta. He revealed the name during the company’s virtual reality and augmented reality conference Facebook Connect.

Meta is to be the new corporate name, but apps and services such as Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, etc, will be able to retain their current brand except for Oculus. Oculus will be rebranded as Meta Quest.

The Facebook Connect event was heavily focused on the metaverse, and the CEO shared the company’s vision on the development of the metaverse and virtual world.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that, “Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are a company that builds technology to connect people, and the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started.”

Just last month, Facebook announced they are planning to invest $50 million to develop a metaverse over the next two years.

The CEO also debuted the new logo for Meta replacing its thumbs-up “Like” logo with a blue infinity shape.

The Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference today focused on the possibilities for 3D social interactions, the ability to operate in the metaverse, and the usage of NFTs to represent collectibles and avatars equally.
