Samsung to Use Blockchain Platform Cardano for Intensive Reforestation

In Brief:

  • The firm hopes to have planted two million trees in Madagascar to combat climate change.
  • The partnership was announced during the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 held in Las Vegas.
  • Samsung has stated that this climate change project will be completed by April 2022.

Samsung is launching a new nature-based effort to promote climate and environmental wellness. By the conclusion of the first quarter of 2022, the firm hopes to have planted two million mangroves in Madagascar. Samsung is collaborating with Veritree, a climate solutions platform, to administer the tree-planting programme, which will use blockchain technology to verify and document each step of the reforestation process.

According to a tweet from the Cardano Foundation’s Sidney Vollmer, the American division of the South Korean juggernaut will now have exposure to Cardano as a result of its recent agreement with blockchain plantation management system Veritree.

The partnership was announced during the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas.

Samsung now has a fully integrated platform that supports field-level data collecting, site planning, inventory (tree) management, and impact monitoring courtesy of veritree’s use of blockchain technology. The system was created to collect data from the very beginning of the tree-planting process and to provide better transparency throughout the entire operation. Tree planters use their phones to track trees that a sponsor has paid to plant, essentially creating a digital map of the corresponding digital trees.

In a statement, Mark Newton, Samsung Electronics America’s head of corporate sustainability, said that investing in breakthrough technology was “essential” in combating climate change.

According to Samsung, the project’s main purpose is to plant trees on approximately 200 hectares of land. In about 25 years, it is estimated that technology may capture and cancel nearly 1 billion pounds of CO2. Furthermore, Samsung has stated that this climate change project will be completed by April 2022.

Apart from the mangrove plantation project, Samsung also unveiled its plans to launch a new range of smart TVs that would support NFT integration. As a result, Samsung intends to deploy blockchain-based technology to reduce and combat global warming and move towards sustainability.
