Hackers Shifted $3.5 billion Worth of Bitcoin from Bitfinex Stolen Fund

In Brief:

  • Hackers moved $3.5 billion worth BTC from Bitfinex stolen funds to create panic among investors.
  • Hackers could not buy, sell or trade using these Bitcoins.
  • The largest transaction monitored was of 10,000 BTC.

On Tuesday, an estimated 94,643 Bitcoins were transferred to an unknown wallet that was stolen from Bitfinex through hacking in 2016. The transaction movements were revealed by blockchain analytics bot Whale Alerts.

The crypto intellectuals and security experts affirmed that the transfer of the Bitcoin was to create panic among the Bitcoin investors as they were unable to cash out these Bitcoins.

As per the report, 26 transactions involved in the hack were flagged. In total, 94,643.29856151 Bitcoins worth around $3.5 billion have been transferred to an unknown account. Hackers have stolen roughly 80% of the Bitcoin transmitted, amounting to around 120,000 BTC.

Among all these transactions, the largest transaction was 10,000 BTC. As per the current bitcoin price, this is equivalent to $383 million. Also, the hacker has transferred bitcoin in small amounts such as 0.29 BTC. At the time of writing, the wallet where the bitcoins were transferred is holding up 94,643.29 BTC.

In 2019, the exchange succeeded to some extent in getting back some stolen Bitcoins with the help of U.S authorities. Israel has also arrested a few hack-related suspects.

In 2020, Bitfinex announced a bounty of $400 million for those who can deliver information of hackers or stolen funds.

Bitfinex suffered many huge losses in the last few years. In September 2021, Bitfinex mistakenly paid $23 million in Ethereum as transaction fees.
