Intel Unveils 2nd Gen ‘Bonanza Mine’ Chip for Bitcoin Mining

Intel revealed the specifications of its new Bitcoin mining Bonanza Mine ASICs (BMZ2), powered by a 3,600W miner capable of delivering up to 40 THash/s (terahashes per second) of performance in a balanced environment, during the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) 2022.

In Brief:

  • The use of 300 BMZ2 will deliver up to 40 terahashes per second.
  • The Bitcoin Mining ASIC was revealed during ISSCC 2022 that is going to compete with Bitmain & MicroBT.
  • It will draw 2293W power, bringing with it high performance and power-saving modes for efficiency while mining.

The use of 300 tiny but power-efficient BMZ2 chips will enable the ultimate goal of improving Bitcoin (BTC) mining efficiency to be realized. BTC mining equipment needs to evolve for delivering higher performance while consuming giving regard to energy consumption.

The second-gen ‘Bonanza Mine’ ASIC chips are expected to follow an architecture similar to BMZ1’s Intel’s first-gen mining chip, the former one drawing 2,293W of power and consuming 56.97 J/TH, posing a competition to Bitmain and MicroBT.

The hardware will be able to operate in high-performance and power-saving modes, allowing the energy-cost ratio to be optimized across a range of mining efficiencies. Intel hasn’t shared details of the second-gen chips and systems yet.

Previously, Intel revealed that it has several large customers for second-generation chips. This includes BLOCK (led by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey), Argo Blockchain, and GRIID Infrastructure. Last week, it launched an energy-efficient chip for Bitcoin mining. It claimed that they have 1000 times better ppw than mainstream GPUs.
