LeBron James Takes his Shot into the Metaverse

The L.A. Lakers star player, King LeBron James is the latest sports star who hopped into the Metaverse bandwagon as he files four NFT & Metaverse trademark applications.

According to the filing, the new trademarks comprise the following names: LeBron James, LeBron, King James, and Chosen1.

Mike Kondoudis, a trademark lawyer in Washington DC who analyzes Metaverse and NFT trademark filings at the USPTO, revealed the trademark filings in a  recent tweet.

Lebron James has filed 4 trademark applications for:
1⃣LEBRON JAMES
2⃣LEBRON
3⃣CHOSEN1
4⃣KING JAMES

The filings are for:

▶️Virtual basketball courts

LeBron is seeking to trademark his names for downloadable digital assets such as digital collectibles, digital tokens, and NFTs featuring virtual items in each case, which he filed with the help of lawyer Howard Shire of the legal firm Troutman Pepper.

The application is also seen asking for provision for an online marketplace for purchasers and sellers of NFT-authenticated downloadable digital products.

With the trademark applications, LeBron James could be expanding his brand into virtual footwear, clothing, swimwear, headwear, bags, backpacks, sports equipment, sporting goods, toys, home furnishings, posters, trading cards, headphones, phones, video games, watches, jewelry, accessories, and home décor.

As per the filings, a website will be launched, which might include conducting and hosting events online and in virtual reality.

That might take the form of “virtual basketball courts, gyms, and recreational facilities for playing sports in the metaverse and virtual worlds.”

Additionally, Bronny James, LeBron James’ son, filed various trademarks in February, signalling his intention to launch NFTs, clothes, and video games.

From global musicians to movie stars to top sports figures, a slew of celebrities has recently entered the NFT and Metaverse scene. A few days back, Grammy award winning singer Billie Eilish was revealed to have filed trademark applications, one for her name and one for the Blohsh logo indicating her plans to enter metaverse.
