Dr Disrespect Upsets Fans with In-game NFT Release

American video game streamer, Dr Disrespect defended the use of NFTs in his first game project, codenamed Project Moon in a live stream on 15 March.

His development studio Midnight Society has been working on this “vertical battle royale” for quite a few months.

As explained on Midnight Society’s webpage, a slew of Access Pass NFTs will be released, the first of them being The Founders Pass.

The website clearly states that owning an access pass will not give a player any in-game advantage however will give the pass holder “exclusive access to the early builds of the game, private Discord channels, and the ability to not only play but vote on key design decisions that will shape the future development of the game in both micro (reload speeds, recoil balancing, time-to-kill tweaks) and macro (maps, modes, meta) ways.”

Minting this Polygon-based $50 pass NFTs will grant the player a unique and tradable VisorCortex ID, each with varying rarity. Giving its players the choice to choose between a centralized account or a decentralized one, Two Times’ project has still received backlash from the video game community over its use of NFTs.

“Listen, in regards to NFTs you don’t have to have NFTs to play the game,” said Dr Disrespect in defense. “It doesn’t change your experience of the game once it releases and it will continue to be free-to-play. You can’t buy your way to win.”

Jacob Hale, an esports reporter took to Twitter to support Dr Disrespect.

Obviously still early days and we don't know everything yet, but from what we've seen I think @DrDisrespect and @12am have their NFT integration perfect.

It's entirely optional, treated like a proper membership pass, and ultimately provides some return on investment.

The application process for the Founders Pass started on 15 March and will have limited availability of 10,000 passes to create an exclusive community of people who want to be involved in the game development process.

However, the NFT collectors won’t be able to commercialize their NFTs like Bored Apes, and now, Cryptopunks. Cryptopunk NFT holders originally didn’t have IP rights but recently Yuga Labs acquired IP rights of Cryptopunks and Meebits to grant commercial rights of NFTs to holders.

Dr Disrespect is not the only one who got the heavy backlash for infusing NFTs in the gaming world. In December, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. also got a huge backlash for its NFT plans. It even canceled its plan to include NFT in the game.
