UAE Witnesses its First Metaverse Wedding

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) witnessed its first metaverse wedding as French-Paraguayan couple Florian Ughetto and Liz Nunez married in the metaverse on May 19th.

Metaverse platform Decentraland hosted the ceremony attended by the couple’s close family and friends.

Florian and his bride, Liz, walked down the aisle on their very own private Decentraland property, adorning a tailored black and brown suit and a gorgeous white dress purchased for around $100 from the OpenSea.

The wedding took place on May 19 in three places: the metaverse, Zoom (for those who couldn’t figure out how Decentraland worked), and The Springs community in Dubai.

Ketevan created the outfits, which were produced on the polygon blockchain. Wedding contracts were issued and signed as smart contracts, and rings were exchanged as NFTs.

Meanwhile, the after-party took place entirely online in Amnesia Ibiza’s recently acquired metaverse venue, where guests from ten different countries participated.

The pair decided to start their own wedding planning business, branded ‘Easy Wedding.’ Easy Wedding was formed to alleviate the challenges that couples of various nationalities confront when living abroad, especially after the pandemic.

The couple officially married in Georgia in 2019, planned a metaverse follow-up ceremony to see if they would be able to offer this service to other couples interested in the concept through Easy Wedding.

Liz says that “Within a few years from now, it will become the norm to merge both [worlds], virtual and real. People will be able to connect with loved ones in a mixed reality where distance is no longer a concern. Creating unforgettable memories is possible in the virtual world. Our wedding showed us that.”

The duo recorded backups of everything, even their vows. Their wedding was broadcast live on Facebook. All pre-ceremony activities were also streamed so that those who couldn’t attend could still take part in the festivities virtually.

This may be the first metaverse wedding in the UAE, but not the first one in the entire world. In February more than 3000 guests turned up for India’s first wedding reception in the metaverse, hosted by Potterhead couple Dinesh S.P and Janaganandhini Ramaswamy from Tamil Nadu.
