Minecraft Bans In-game NFTs as it Conflicts With the Guidelines

Mojang Studios, a Microsoft-owned gaming firm, declared a ban over non-fungible tokens (NFTs) along with blockchain products in its popular and decade-old game “Minecraft”.

TL;DR:
"To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications nor may they be utilized to create NFTs associated with any in-game content…"

— Minecraft (@Minecraft) July 20, 2022

According to a report published on Wednesday, the NFTs concept reflects a model of scarcity and exclusion of content, which violates their community guidelines. The firm wants to ensure a safe and inclusive experience by avoiding Minecraft’s integration with blockchain-based products in the form of worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods.

Mojang stated in the blog that NFTs linked to scarcity and exclusion which players earn from the activities “does not align with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together.”

Before this sudden ban over NFTs, Minecraft got a web 3 metaverse update “NFT Worlds” in February this year.

It also condemned the “pricing and investment mentality” around NFTs, which disrupts/kills the player’s focus from enjoying the game.

The company also warned Minecraft players about third-party NFTs. It stated that third-party NFTs are not very reliable and can make investment loss to players. The reason behind this concern is that third-party NFTs require an asset manager who might disappear without notice.
