BANDESAL Keeps El Salvador's Bitcoin Buys a Secret

The BANDESAL Bank of EL Salvador is keeping the country’s Bitcoin buys a secret. It has refused to provide information on the government’s controversial Bitcoin buys.

El Salvador’s Anti-Corruption Legal Advisory Centre (ALAC), which provides citizens legal aid for speaking out against corruption, released a document from the bank via its twitter handle.

El pasado mes de septiembre @BANDESAL denegó por segunda vez entregar información sobre la compra y venta de Bitcoin por parte del gobierno salvadoreño, alegando reserva y contrariando el principio de máxima publicidad y proporcionalidad. BANDESAL is in charge of managing funds used by the Salvadoran government for its Bitcoin projects, and this is not the first time that BANDESAL has refused to reveal information on the purchase and sale of Bitcoin by the country.

ALAC criticised BANDESAL for saying it cannot reveal the “confidential” information as the confidentiality limits the possibility for citizens to access and receive information on the operations carried out with public funds by BANDESAL.

While critics are questioning the Salvadoran Government’s Bitcoin buying spree and legalising it as an official currency, El Salvador has placed one more step to spread Bitcoin adoption by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Swiss City Lugano.
