Sony Reveals Patent for Tracking NFTs in Video Games

Multinational video game company Sony Interactive Entertainment, responsible for the PlayStation brand, has revealed patents related to NFTs and blockchain technology. The patent (applied last year) is about tracking digital assets generated within a video game.

The patent application is titled “Tracking Unique In-Game Digital Assets Using Tokens on a Distributed Ledger,” and it describes how blockchain technology would be used to track the history of a unique in-game item, including who created it, who owned it previously, and whether it was modified along the way.

The Japanese conglomerate highlights the global popularity of gaming and players who want to own one-of-a-kind items associated with their favorite celebrities, activities, and esports tournament winners.

“In traditional video games, there is no way to know, track, or authenticate a history of a particular instance of an in-game item. For instance, in traditional video games, there is no way to differentiate a specific instance of an in-game item that a famous player of the video game used to win a famous tournament from any other instance of the in-game item,” the background section of the patent notes.

The patent application also mentions transferring items between games and even across platforms.
