Hong Kong Police Launched Metaverse Platform CyberDefender

The Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) of the Hong Kong Police Force has launched the CyberDefender Metaverse Platform, a groundbreaking project focused on ensuring safety in the metaverse.

During the online event “Exploring the Metaverse,” the CyberDefender initiative was introduced, highlighting the importance of being cautious and vigilant in virtual environments. Mr. Ip Cheuk-yu, Chief Inspector of the CSTCB, emphasized the risks associated with cybercrimes like investment fraud and unauthorized access in the metaverse.

Three virtual venues in the “CyberDefender Metaverse” platform, namely the CyberDefender City and the Web3-themed Gallery and Auditorium, were open to the public.

With Web3’s virtual assets being decentralized, cybercriminals may target devices, virtual wallets, and smart contracts, potentially leading to asset theft. The CyberDefender initiative primarily aims to educate the younger demographic, raise awareness about IT pitfalls, and prevent tech-related crimes.

In the first quarter of 2023, the Hong Kong Police Force reported a significant increase of 663 incidents related to virtual assets, resulting in a loss of $570 million. This underscores the urgent need for cybersecurity awareness and effective response to cyber threats.

As metaverse technology becomes more mainstream, initiatives like CyberDefender are expected to multiply. Educating the public about potential risks and promoting cybersecurity will be increasingly crucial. Ensuring the safety of metaverse users and addressing metaverse security will undoubtedly be paramount in the coming years.
