On July 28, Worldcoin, Proof of Humanity protocol, released audit reports conducted by two security consulting firms, Nethermind, and Least Authority, to address security concerns and ensure privacy.
Nethermind found 26 security issues with the protocol. During the verification phase, they fixed 24 (92.6%) of them, mitigated one, and acknowledged another one, which is still being worked on. Least Authority discovered three issues and provided six suggestions, all of which have been resolved or are in the process of being resolved.
Worldcoin gained attention in 2021 when it allowed users to receive free tokens by verifying their identity through iris scanning using an “Orb” device. The project was co-founded by Sam Altman, who is associated with OpenAI.
The project has faced criticism for its data collection practices, with concerns about privacy and potential violations of data protection laws. Some in the crypto community support it as a defense against malicious AI, while others worry about privacy risks.
The recent audit reports focused on security aspects like protection against DDoS attacks, encryption, key management, and data integrity. Most of the identified issues have been resolved or will be soon, except for one, which is still being evaluated.
Despite scrutiny during its public launch, the Worldcoin team has taken steps to address security concerns and make improvements based on the audit findings.
