In a recent update, the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched a challenging competition centered around fostering innovation in web browser development for the advancement of the Web3 ecosystem and cryptocurrency.

As per the Ministry of Electronics & IT’s declaration on August 9, the launch of the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC) which is spearheaded by MeitY, CCA and C-DAC Bangalore carries significant weight.

This significance arises from India’s lack of parliamentary legislation pertaining to Web3 or cryptocurrency, even though the country has been pushing for worldwide crypto regulations during its tenure as the G20 president.

In light of this, the IWBDC competition “seeks to inspire and empower technology enthusiasts, innovators, and developers” throughout the country.

Their objective is to create a domestically developed web browser that incorporates its own trust store and includes a CCA India root certificate.

Participants have the opportunity to trace the path of technical mentorship throughout the challenge. Among the total prize pool of Rs. 3.41 crore, the victor will be awarded Rs. 1 crore.

It’s important to take note that the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has highlighted the browser’s capability to digitally sign documents using a crypto token.

This advancement enhances security in transactions and digital engagement.

Smt. Sunita Verma, Scientist G & GC (R&D in Electronics & IT), emphasized the significance of this challenge, which represents a significant stride towards an Aatmmanirbhar Bharat, “designed to strengthen India’s digital sovereignty through the development of the Indian Web Browser.”
