Arbitrum Transactions Glitch, Offchain Labs CTO Responds

The Arbitrum Layer 2 project team, Offchain Labs, clarifies that the network did not experience a one-hour downtime yesterday.

A layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum, Arbitrum, encountered a disturbance in its transaction processing that was incorrectly recognized as a network disruption.

1/ Was Arbitrum One down for an hour? No

Did the batch poster stop posting for an hour? Yes

What does this all mean? 🧵

— Harry Kalodner (💙,💙) (@hkalodner) August 18, 2023

Harry Kalodner, Co-founder and CTO of Offchain Labs said that the root cause of the issue was identified as a particular component referred to as the “batch poster.” This component was responsible for the temporary halt in its function of posting transactions.

“What happens if the batch poster stops posting? The sequencer continues accepting and ordering transactions along with publishing confirmations, but batches won’t be posted,” Kalodner explained.

Kalodner noticed that despite the batch poster having an abundant amount of ETH to initiate all transactions, Geth’s mempool implementation dismissed its attempts. The activities of the batch poster utilized roughly 2% of Ethereum’s gas limit, and the behavior of the gas refunder was unconventional.

Arbiscan, the blockchain tracker, reported a one-hour interruption between batch numbers 316,002 and 316,003 in the sequence of batches. This resulted in the temporary suspension of processing and confirming new transactions on the blockchain during that time.

During this hour-long pause, users and participants within the Arbitrum network might have encountered delays or disturbances in their transactional activities.
