FBI and GCHQ Warn Against New Crypto-Targeting Malware

The joint advisory report from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) has raised concerns about a new malware called “Infamous Chisel.”

New Russian malware, known as Infamous Chisel, associated with #Sandworm activity, is being used for unauthorized remote access and data exfiltration from Android devices. Explore today’s #FBI, @NCSC @CISAgov and @NSACyber joint advisory. https://t.co/fJQwMsjRgz pic.twitter.com/O0xkcJuvT3

The report is a joint effort of FBI, NSA, CISA, NCSC, GCHQ and others.

According to report, this malicious software is linked to the Russian military intelligence agency GRU’s hacking unit, Sandworm. Sandworm has been using Infamous Chisel to target Android devices via Tor network to steal information secretly.

Infamous Chisel focuses on gathering data from directories including popular cryptocurrency exchange apps like Binance, Coinbase, and Trust Wallet. It also targets messaging platforms such as Telegram and Discord.

Even though Infamous Chisel is not particularly covert, its capacity to steal important information means that it still poses a serious threat. The fact that many Android smartphones lack effective security features to stop such assaults is one factor contributing to their lack of stealth.

Approximately $1 billion has been lost this year in the cryptocurrency business, including $45 million in August, although this is an improvement from the approximately $486 million lost in July.
