Consensys is Preparing for Cross-Chain Metamask Snaps

Consensys is Preparing for Cross-Chain Metamask Snaps which will allow users to interact with a variety of different blockchain networks, get updates from projects, and help demystify what goes on in complex transactions, as per Consensys Head of Strategy Simon Morris.

Simon Morris, Consensys’ strategy director, said that the functionality of MetaMask Snaps is similar to an Apple App Store for the crypto wallet in an interview at Korea Blockchain Week. MetaMask Snaps empowers third-party developers to release new decentralized applications (DApps) called Snaps that expand the capabilities of MetaMask.

Snaps’ initial release will go through security checks and be added to a whitelist by the developers at Consensys. The future goal of MetaMask Snaps is to make the process as permissionless as publishing on the web.

Morris also said they are set to launch the upgrade later this year, in which users will be able to download third-party extensions directly to their MetaMask wallets. With this, MetaMask’s utility and interoperability will be increased by allowing it to interact with non-EVM chains such as Bitcoin, Solana, Avalanche, and Starknet.

At present, Users frequently feel confused or intimidated while they are confirming transactions, but Morris suggested that Snaps will also help to lessen the secrecy surrounding signing transactions and smart contract evaluation processes.

Snaps’ other standout feature is set to allow developers to send messages to users internally on MetaMask. Snaps will serve as a “communication layer between DApp developers and their users” and ensure that users stay informed and engaged with the latest updates, so there will be no need to navigate the website or social media account of a project for updates.
