Kraken Helps UK Police in Returning $2M Stolen Crypto

The cryptocurrency exchange, Kraken, played a crucial role in assisting the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) in recovering £1.9 million ($2.3 million) worth of stolen cryptocurrency.

💸 Millions to be paid back to victims💸

Almost £2m worth of stolen cryptocurrency is to be paid back to victims of theft as a result of work by SEROCU.

It follows the sentencing of Wybo Wiersma earlier this year.

The funds were seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act following a 2018 IOTA cryptocurrency scam, marking the first use of the legislation to confiscate crypto from an exchange in the UK.

Overcoming various challenges, SEROCU collaborated with the Financial Conduct Authority, the National Police Chief’s Council, and Kraken to convert the assets to GBP for lawful return to victims worldwide.

In a statement, SEROCU mentioned, “Kraken provided significant expertise and support that enabled SEROCU to convert the stolen crypto-assets into GBP for their return to victims.”

The victims, across the world, had patiently waited for five years for this case to resolve  and it is thanks to SEROCU’s innovation and collaboration, particularly with Kraken, without whom this may not have been possible

The case revolved around Wybo Wiersma, who was sentenced to prison for creating a fraudulent website that stole IOTA tokens. Kraken’s expertise and collaboration played a crucial role in the successful transaction, ensuring victims were rightfully compensated.

This case underscores the importance of awareness in the crypto ecosystem to prevent falling victim to scams, highlighting the need for education among participants in the crypto space.
