Bitcoin User Sets Record with $3.1M Transaction Fee

A Bitcoin user seems to have unintentionally paid a transaction fee of more than $3.1 million today, breaking the previous record of a $500,000 charge paid in September and creating a new record in U.S. dollars for a single Bitcoin transaction.

At 9:59 a.m. UTC, 83.65 BTC ($3.1 million) was paid to transfer 55.77 BTC ($2.1 million). The user overpaid by 120,528 times, with the pre-transaction balance being 139.42 BTC ($5.2 million), according to Bitcoin explorer Mempool.

Before the fourth Bitcoin transaction incurred the record fee, the address used to make the payment was activated earlier today. The receiving address is likewise somewhat recent With a date of October 16.

According to the blockchain explorer Blockchair, AntPool mined the transaction at block 818,087. AntPool did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Block and has not yet made any public remarks regarding the deal.

The crypto services company Paxos later revealed that the previous record $500,000 charge paid in September was a “fat finger” overpayment. Paxos will get the money back from the miner that made that transaction possible, F2Pool.
