These recent repayments follow communication from Nobuaki Kobayashi, the trustee overseeing the Mt. Gox estate

It appears that repayments for Bitcoin held on the now-defunct Mt. Gox exchange have begun, as indicated by emerging reports on social media platforms.

Users on the Reddit page r/mtgoxinsolvency have shared experiences of receiving payments denominated in Japanese Yen via PayPal.

These repayments arrive nearly a decade after the funds were initially locked on the exchange in February 2014. Please note that these reports have not been officially confirmed.

Accounts from Reddit users describe unexpected payments, with one individual initially mistaking the email notification for a phishing attempt before confirming the actual receipt of payment in their PayPal account.

Another user mentioned receiving a partial payment, leaving a significant outstanding amount from their original Bitcoin claim.

The repayment process is expected to unfold in various stages, including base repayment, early lump-sum repayment, and intermediate repayment.

These recent repayments follow communication from Nobuaki Kobayashi, the trustee overseeing the Mt. Gox estate, who notified rehabilitation creditors via email on November 21 about the commencement of repayments.

Kobayashi’s email indicated plans to initiate initial cash repayments to creditors in 2023, to continue these payments into 2024. However, specific details about the timeline for individual rehabilitation creditors’ repayments were not provided.

Earlier, on September 21, the Mt. Gox Trustee extended the repayment deadline from October 31, 2023, to the same date in 2024. There were indications that some rehabilitation creditors who had already provided necessary information might potentially receive repayments “as early as the end of this year.”
