Vitalik Buterin Spotlights Core Layer 2 Network Challenges

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin engaged in a debate within the Ethereum community, addressing core issues in Layer-two (L2) blockchain protocols.

To me the core issues are:

1. Validiums are better than multisigs, and the naming should reflect that
2. Rollups are better than validiums security wise, though more expensive, and the naming should reflect rollups' higher security without making validiums feel illegitimate

Buterin advocated for using the term “validium” over multisig, asserting its superiority for many applications and emphasizing the importance of reliable distributed data availability systems for enhanced security.

According to Buterin, “Rollups are better than validiums security wise, though more expensive, and the naming should reflect rollups’ higher security without making validiums feel illegitimate.”

Buterin categorized L2 blockchains into “security favoring” and “scale favoring” protocols, highlighting the significance of unconditional security guarantees in rollups.

Acknowledging that rollups offer higher security at a higher cost, Buterin proposed a naming convention that reflects this without delegitimizing validiums.

Buterin believes that opting for a validium approach is suitable for many applications and suggests that robust distributed data availability guarantee systems can enhance the practical security of a validium.

In a related development, Buterin declared success in Ethereum’s layer 2 strategy, citing the ongoing transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake and the adoption of layer 2 protocols like rollups and validiums to address scalability challenges.

The debate underscores the ongoing exploration and refinement of blockchain Layer-two protocols to ensure optimal functionality and security.
