Coinbase Diversifies Ethereum Support Amid Geth Dominance

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is actively seeking to integrate an additional Ethereum execution client into its system, addressing concerns raised by critics about the dominance of Geth within the Ethereum ecosystem.

On January 22, a post on X (formerly Twitter) brought attention to the exchange’s redoubled efforts to wean itself off of go-Ethereum, or Geth.

When Coinbase Cloud offered Ethereum staking, it discovered that Geth was the only Ethereum execution client that complied with its technical specifications.

The thread says, “Although we’ve evaluated execution clients since 2020, none have met Coinbase Cloud’s requirements to date. Many other operators on the network have reached the same conclusion, which is part of the reason why 84% of Ethereum validators run Geth. However, the tide is turning.”

Geth is an Ethereum execution client that manages the deployment and execution of smart contracts, in addition to transaction processing.

Now, Coinbase is evaluating different Ethereum execution clients technically to potentially integrate one more into its infrastructure. Before the end of February 2024, the exchange plans to formally announce the process.

The thread also says, “And then followed up in May after we were able to add Lighthouse support and balance our validators between them and Prysm.”
