Ethereum developers have unveiled the schedule for the final test runs of the Dencun upgrade on the Sepolia and Goerli testnets. This marks a crucial step before the upgrade’s implementation on the Ethereum mainnet.
Dencun is a major upgrade or “hard fork” planned for the Ethereum blockchain that will enable “proto-dank sharding,” and promises to introduce vital features to enhance scalability and reduce transaction costs. These changes are pivotal in laying the groundwork for the broader adoption of the Ethereum blockchain.
Before the Dencun upgrade hits the main blockchain, developers plan to conduct a thorough dress rehearsal of the protocol changes on the Sepolia and Holesky test networks (testnets) on Jan. 30 and Feb. 7. The success of these tests will determine the official scheduling of the mainnet upgrade, tentatively planned for late February or early March.
Despite minor hiccups, the recent upgrade on the Goerli testnet serves as a precursor to the upcoming Dencun implementation. This successful testnet upgrade has bolstered confidence in the Ethereum development community.
Dencun is set to be triggered on Sepolia at 22:51 UTC and epoch 132608. If the final test on Holesky proceeds as planned on Feb. 7 at 11:34 UTC, at epoch 950272, developers will finalize the schedule for Dencun to go live on Ethereum’s mainnet, targeting the end of February or the early days of March.
Recognizing Dencun as Ethereum’s most substantial functional leap since the Merge last summer, developers are adopting a cautious and deliberate approach to ensure the stability of the network during and after the upgrade.
