Ladan Stewart, who recently headed the SEC’s new crypto enforcement unit, has left the agency to join White & Case as a partner. Stewart spent eight years in the SEC’s enforcement division, recently serving as chief of the Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit created last September.
Stewart led SEC accusations against big crypto actors such as Coinbase while acting as the agency’s leader in her role. The agency filed suit in June 2018 against Coinbase, alleging that the company was an unregistered securities exchange. Stewart previously worked for the SEC’s legal team, which argued against Ripple Labs over whether XRP is an unregistered security.
White & Case, a global law firm, said Stewart will develop a crypto and cyber defense practice as crypto adoption grows with new Bitcoin ETFs. Her experience should aid White & Case as more crypto companies face SEC scrutiny. The firm also recently added partners like private equity lawyer Taurie Zeitzer as it grows its corporate practice.
