Offchain Labs has implemented an update to its ArbOS, also known as Atlas. This upgrade will add support for binary large object (blob) transactions, designed to purposely reduce the cost of transferring data from Layer 2 to the Ethereum mainnet.
The main purpose of the Atlas upgrade is to integrate blob transactions, a feature introduced with the recent Dencun launch on Ethereum. This move was approved by the Arbitrum DAO, with the community supporting the majority of the changes implemented the day before the upgrade.
Representatives from Offchain Labs expect a remarkable reduction in the average base commission, dropping from 0.1 Gwei to 0.01 Gwei. Consequently, an operation that previously cost $0.5 will now cost the user approximately $0.05.
Other Layer 2 networks, such as Optimism, Base, and Starknet, have already experienced significant reductions in their average transaction fees by implementing blob transactions immediately after Dencun.
The commissions on the Arbitrum network were updated on March 13, following the activation of Dencun on the Ethereum mainnet. A crucial component of this upgrade, EIP-4844, aims to scale the network by creating a new transaction type for blobs.
With this upgrade, Arbitrum aims to be cheaper and more scalable than other options in the Layer 2 ecosystem, making it a strong contender in this fast-changing space.
