The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) confirmed Nadeem Anjarwalla’s escape from lawful custody on Friday, 22 March.
Anjarwalla, a suspect in the criminal probe into Binance’s activities in Nigeria, fled from an Abuja guest house where he was detained. Guards on duty reportedly escorted him to a nearby mosque for Ramadan prayers, facilitating his escape.
Mr. Zakari Mijinyawa, Head of Strategic Communication at ONSA, stated that immediate steps were taken to collaborate with relevant security agencies and Interpol to address Anjarwalla’s apprehension.
Preliminary investigations reveal he fled Nigeria using a smuggled passport. Consequently, the personnel responsible for his custody have been arrested, and a thorough inquiry is underway.
British and Kenyan national Anjarwalla, who was Africa regional manager of Binance, was under a 14-day remand order of the Nigerian court before his escape. Binance management emphasized their commitment to staff safety upon learning about the absence of one of their members due to imprisonment. They assured Nigerian investigative agencies of their support.
