A new Ethereum blockchain feature, BlobScriptions, introduced by Ethscriptions on March 27, has led to a significant rise in Blob fees.
These fees, required for data inclusion in Ethereum blocks, spiked to 585 gwei (about $18) shortly after launch, contrasting with the previous average of one wei (a fraction of a cent).
Despite the initial surge, Blob fees have dropped to 35.8 gwei ($1.20) per Coinbrain data. Over 4,500 inscriptions have been made since BlobScriptions’ debut, indicating growing user adoption. Ethscriptions founder, Tom Lehman, highlighted the escalating “blobspace” cost, urging users to utilize the official protocol.
Blob data, stored for approximately 18 days on Ethereum nodes, faces removal thereafter, although Ethscriptions indexer promises indefinite storage. Introduced through EIP-4844 during Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade, blobs aim to reduce layer-2 transaction costs significantly.
This upgrade saw transaction fees on platforms like Arbitrum and Polygon plummet, encouraging developers to utilize blobs efficiently. For instance, one developer managed to inscribe the entire Bee Movie script for less than $13 in ETH gas fees just 15 minutes post-upgrade.
Ethscriptions’ BlobScriptions feature sparked a debate on Ethereum’s escalating Blob fees, with users urged to adhere to the official protocol amid growing adoption and concerns over data storage costs.
