Etherscan Ads Fuel Massive Phishing Campaign, Users Warned

A significant phishing campaign targeting Etherscan users has been discovered, involving numerous advertisements on the Ethereum blockchain explorer Etherscan. Community member McBiblets uncovered a series of advertisements on the platform that were linked to a widespread phishing campaign, aiming to deceive unsuspecting users.

Upon closer investigation, it became apparent that these deceptive advertisements were not confined solely to Etherscan.

They were also spotted on well-known phishing websites and even made their way onto major search engines like Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo, as well as a popular social media platform.

Scam Sniffer, a Web3 anti-scam platform, flagged the lack of oversight from advertisement aggregators like Coinzilla and Persona as a potential factor contributing to the proliferation of these phishing attempts. This oversight gap could allow malicious actors to exploit vulnerabilities and target crypto users.

🚨🕵️‍♂️ Alert: Phishing ads running rampant on Google, Twitter, Bing, & DuckDuckGo are now targeting Etherscan users.

The modus operandi of this nefarious scheme, known as the “wallet drainer scam,” involves enticing users to fraudulent websites and coaxing them into linking their crypto wallets.

Once linked, scammers can siphon funds from these wallets without the need for user authentication, perpetuating financial losses for victims.

SlowMist, a blockchain security firm, echoed these concerns, warning users to exercise caution when encountering advertisements on Etherscan.

While suspicions point toward the notorious cyber phishing organization Angel Drainer as the perpetrator behind this ongoing campaign, conclusive evidence regarding the identity of the scammers remains elusive.

To safeguard against such threats, users must educate themselves on phishing attacks and adopt proactive measures to protect their digital assets.
