Australian attorneys have finally dropped the criminal prosecution launched against tech giant Meta (META.O) by mining billionaire Andrew Forrest over alleged cryptocurrency scam ads on Facebook with Forrest’s image. This move caused a failure for Forrest, who aimed to bring justice to the company for lying and advertising through the internet.
Meta is currently facing a civil lawsuit filed by Forrest in California, even though Meta didn’t witness the end of the criminal case. The lawsuit is still ongoing. However, CDPP called the case dishonestly short of evidence for non-prosecution, which disappointed Mr. Forrest.
Forrest claimed Meta violated Australia’s anti-money laundering law by allowing third parties to put fraudulent cryptocurrency promotions through their platform. It further joined Meta in pledging to the fight against scamming on all their platforms and calling for those swindled to contact customer support for assistance.
Forrest stated his commitment to seeing the California case through to the end. He accused Meta of mishandling the problem of scam ads. Forrest’s presentation showed that more than 1000 bogus ads featuring his profile have been created and shown from April 2023 to November 2023 on Facebook, causing huge losses to consumers.
