A bitcoiner named Jameson Lopp became controversial by using the testnet and creating over 165,000 blocks in a week, simulating three years of activity. Lopp says that this was a critical step in the system’s overall security after more obvious efforts did not attain the expected results.
This issue has evoked discord in the Bitcoin community. Lopp suggests it was very effective, and that he only used $1 worth of electricity on the Bitcoin network test, which revealed a weakness that was then fixed, also resetting mining rewards.
However, Francis Pouliot is another critic who believes that Lopp’s work is like vandalism because it disrupts the developers’ work, and he is also questioning Lopp’s methods.
Some community members have suggested that Lopp, as well as others who would perform an action regularly resulting in Bitcoin security being compromised, should be banned.
