AEPD Orders to Halt Worldcoin Data Collection in Spain

Tools for Humanity Corporation, a worldcoin contributor has voluntarily offered to extend the pause of Worldcoin orb operations in Spain in the wake of ongoing BayLDA investigation process.

The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has informed that THC will momentarily stop operations in Spain until data protection authority BayLDA (Bavaria, Germany, Bayerische Landesamt für Datenschutzaufsicht ) completes its investigation into allegations of treatment of personal data.

Tools for Humanity Corporation has halted its activity in Spain until the end of 2024 or until the BayLDA reaches a definitive resolution regarding the company’s data processing practices. The AEPD’s precautionary measure, established under Article 66.1 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), aims to protect the rights and freedoms of interested parties.

Following the AEPD’s provisional measure, Tools for Humanity Corporation announced changes to its operation, such as introducing age verification controls and the option to delete iris codes. The AEPD is collaborating with the BayLDA, as it is the main authority regarding data processing, while the AEPD acts as the interested authority, as stipulated by the GDPR.

Besides, the investigations are ongoing in Spain and Germany while recently the company was expelled from Hong Kong for breaching the laws. The Hong Kong investigation showed that Worldcoin had infringed the Privacy Ordinance because it did not specify whether the submission of personal data by customers was compulsory or not.

Worldcoin is experiencing increasing adoption with more users providing their details to receive WLD tokens. At the time of writing the WLD was trading at $4.83 a decline of 0.15% in 24 hours. The company plans to extend its utility in the Web3 space and increase its token supply in the future, having recently launched its blockchain network, World Chain, in April 2024.
