A Facebook comment claiming inside knowledge of the jury’s decision has raised concerns about potential juror misconduct in the criminal trial against former President Donald Trump. Judge Juan Merchan notified both the prosecution and defense of the online comment on June 7th.
According to Judge Merchan’s letter, a user named Michael Anderson posted on the New York Unified Court System’s Facebook page stating: “My cousin is a juror and says Trump is getting convicted.” The week-old comment was in response to an unrelated court notice about oral arguments.
While the connection between the commenter and an actual juror is unverified, the judge considered it significant enough to bring to the attention of ADA Joshua Steinglass and Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche.
Juror impartiality is vital for a fair trial. If they find out a juror was biased, Trump’s lawyers might use that to appeal the verdict.
The final judgment in the case, in which Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records, is scheduled for July. An appeal focusing on this potential juror issue is expected.
A spokesperson for Trump’s campaign stated they are looking into Judge Merchan’s notification about the Facebook comment.
The guilty verdict has sparked political conflict as Trump pledged to appeal to the president about what he considered an injustice in New York. Subsequently, with the proceedings of the legal process, this specific juror misconduct claim is expected to heighten the focus on the legitimacy of the trial.
