Bettors on Polymarket are wagering that Len Sassaman is the individual named in the upcoming HBO documentary. A new HBO documentary from Emmy-nominated filmmaker Cullen Hoback, director of Q: Into the Storm, promises to name the real identity behind Bitcoin’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Hoback, who famously unmasked the individual behind the QAnon conspiracy theory, is now turning his attention to solving one of the greatest mysteries in the crypto world.
The upcoming film has sparked renewed interest, especially on the prediction market platform Polymarket, where bettors are speculating on who Satoshi might be. Len Sassaman, a renowned cryptographer who tragically took his own life in 2011, leads the predictions with 46% of the bets.
Sassaman’s long history of academic work on cryptography, paired with his deep commitment to privacy and decentralization, aligns closely with the principles espoused by Bitcoin’s anonymous founder. His disappearance from public life also coincides with the time Satoshi stopped posting on Bitcoin forums.
Another prominent candidate is Hal Finney, a noted cryptographer and early Bitcoin developer, though he trails with only 17% of the bets. However, Polymarket bettors are also leaving room for the possibility that the documentary might point to someone unknown to the crypto world, with 32% of the wagers suggesting that Satoshi could be multiple people or an entirely unfamiliar figure.
Despite the mounting excitement, skepticism remains high. A separate contract on Polymarket gives an 89% chance that Satoshi’s identity won’t be definitively proven in 2024.
This isn’t the first attempt to uncover Satoshi’s identity. In 2014, Newsweek claimed that California resident Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto was the mysterious creator. Nakamoto, a naturalized U.S. citizen of Japanese descent with a background in math and engineering, initially sparked intrigue with cryptic responses to reporters. However, through his lawyers, he later issued a firm denial, stating he had no involvement with Bitcoin.
As anticipation builds around Hoback’s documentary, the mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto may continue to fascinate the world, but whether it will finally be solved remains to be seen.
