Razzlekhan’s Husband Sentenced to 5 Years for Bitfinex Hack

Ilya Lichtenstein, a 35-year-old tech entrepreneur, was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in laundering approximately 120,000 bitcoins stolen during the 2016 Bitfinex hack.

The sentencing, announced by the U.S. Department of Justice, follows his guilty plea to conspiracy to commit money laundering tied to one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in history.

Lichtenstein transferred 119,754 bitcoins to his wallet by illegally authorizing over 2,000 transactions after breaking into Bitfinex’s network. He erased log files and network access passwords that would have revealed his activities to police authorities in order to hide his tracks.

At the time of the theft, the stolen bitcoins were valued at $71 million, but their value had surged to over $4.5 billion by the time of Lichtenstein’s arrest in February 2022.

Lichtenstein, along with his wife, Heather Morgan, who is also known by her rapper alias “Razzlekhan”, employed sophisticated methods to launder the stolen funds.

These techniques included using computer programs to automate transactions, depositing funds into various darknet markets and cryptocurrency exchanges, converting bitcoins into other cryptocurrencies (a practice known as “chain hopping”), and utilizing cryptocurrency mixing services to obscure the origin of the funds.

They also deposited a portion of the proceeds into U.S.-based business accounts to legitimize their banking activities and exchanged some of the stolen funds for gold coins.

Despite these complex laundering strategies, some of their methods were criticized for lacking sophistication. For instance, Brett Johnson, a former cybercriminal, noted that Lichtenstein’s use of Coinbase accounts directly linked to him was a significant oversight, suggesting a lack of experience in money laundering.

In August 2023, both Lichtenstein and Morgan pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Prosecutors recommended a five-year sentence for Lichtenstein, which the court upheld. In addition to his prison term, Lichtenstein will serve three years of supervised release.

Heather Morgan is scheduled to be sentenced on November 18, 2024. Prosecutors have recommended an 18-month prison sentence for her, citing her lesser involvement in the laundering scheme.

This case marks one of the largest financial seizures in U.S. Department of Justice history, with authorities recovering over 96% of the stolen funds, amounting to approximately $3.6 billion.
