The largest digital assets company, Tether, has made a $250,000 donation to OpenSats. It is a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to funding free and open-source initiatives that support Bitcoin and advance, open censorship-resistant technologies.

The announcement was made today by Tether, wherein it is stated that the donation aims to support OpenSats’ operational needs and grant-making efforts.

These funds will provide continued financial support for a wide range of free and open-source projects. The projects could range from protocol development and privacy tools to vital research and education within the ecosystem. OpenSats operates on a transparent model and allocates 100% of donor funds directly to grantees, sustaining its own operations through separate donations.

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, emphasized the company’s belief in the long-term value of open technology. “We at Tether believe that Bitcoin, and the free, open-source software that powers it, are indispensable to a freer and decentralized future,” said Ardoino. “OpenSats is on the front line supporting the continued growth of this ecosystem by funding the next generation of innovators, and we are proud to support their work” he added.

OpenSats was founded to create a sustainable and transparent funding model for contributors that help in Bitcoin and open-source software. Its grant-making focuses on a broad range of contributors, including developers, researchers, educators, designers, and reviewers.

Matt Odell, Co-Founder of OpenSats, talked about the charity’s past impact. “OpenSats has provided over 300 grants to developers working on freedom tech projects. Support from Tether will help us continue to scale our mission globally,” Odell stated.

The donation confirms Tether’s standing with free open-source development and funding public goods that support financial freedom and the broader Bitcoin ecosystem.
