India’s Pine Labs Enters $310B Cross-Border Payments Market

Key Highlights

  • Pine Labs plans stablecoin-backed prepaid card launch across Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
  • CEO Amrish Rau highlights India’s fintech entering global markets while avoiding domestic regulatory hurdles.
  • The move positions India at the forefront of international stablecoin adoption amid $310B global market growth.

Pine Labs, backed by Temasek and Peak XV, will launch a prepaid card powered by stablecoins in nine countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia by the end of April.

The announcement, made by the company’s CEO, Amrish Rau, marks the first initiative of its kind by a listed Indian payments company to tap into the rapidly growing stablecoin market.

Focus on stablecoin-friendly markets

The prepaid card will be funded with stablecoins from consumers’ digital wallets and will allow payments in local currencies through real-time conversion at the point of sale.

Rau highlighted that the company is targeting countries that have a “stablecoin-friendly stance” but did not specify which markets would be included in the launch.

The CEO also clarified that Pine Labs does not plan to launch the product in India or China. India does not prohibit stablecoins, but the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cautioned that they could weaken monetary policy management and encourage illegal transactions.

Similarly, China recently banned the unauthorized offshore issuance of yuan-pegged stablecoins and continues to crack down on virtual currencies.

Cross-border payments and market trends

Companies like Stripe, PayPal, and Klarna are already using stablecoins to make cross-border payments easier. The market for these tokens has grown to more than $310 billion, with U.S. dollar–pegged coins such as Tether and USDC leading the way.

Rau said, “Cross‑border payments potentially are getting replaced today by stablecoins… these are very real trends which are taking off globally and we are absolutely building for it.”

The stablecoin-backed prepaid card initiative represents a first for an Indian-listed company, signaling the country’s fintech sector is exploring international markets for innovation even as domestic regulations remain cautious.

Pine Labs’ business and strategic focus

Headquartered in India’s national capital region, Pine Labs offers payment solutions including point-of-sale machines for card transactions. Despite increased competition in the digital payments space, the firm has been expanding internationally, with clients in about 20 countries. Overseas operations contribute approximately 17% of the company’s revenue.

Pine Labs reported a 24% year-on-year rise in gross revenue for the December quarter, reaching ₹7.44 billion (~$81.4 million). Rau highlighted the company’s commitment to expanding through technology, stating, “All tech companies are into stablecoins, they are into AI, they are into cross‑border. That’s the way to go… If you don’t capture that opportunity, Indian fintechs are going to get left behind.”

Implications for India’s fintech landscape

India continues to take a cautious approach toward stablecoins, but Pine Labs’ initiative shows the increasing global demand for alternative cross-border payment solutions.

Experts say Indian fintech firms that enter international markets could benefit from being in regions more open to cryptocurrency innovations, while also navigating domestic regulatory constraints.

The launch may also accelerate the adoption of stablecoins overseas, highlighting how Indian companies are contributing to the global fintech ecosystem even as regulatory hurdles remain at home.
